THE MAN AS THE PRIEST IN THE HOME

“That He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to Himself a glorious church (wife), not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” Ephesians 5:26-27 (NKJV).

A man has the priestly role in the home. He must provide spiritual direction and admonition for his wife and children.

He has the responsibility to teach, instruct, rebuke and correct his wife in love. If he doesn’t know God’s word, he lacks the ability to perform these priestly functions. You don’t change people by nagging, you change them by praying for them and sharing God’s Word with them in love. This includes buying relevant resources like books and messages that will help them.

The man as the priest in the home, should honour his wife so that his prayers will not be hindered. 1Peter 3:7, *”Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honour to the wife as the weaker vessels, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”* Treat her like a precious jewel. Honouring your wife makes beating, humiliating and maltreating her a taboo.

As a priest of the home, a man should set God’s vision for his children. God has a purpose for every life He created *(see Rev. 4:11)*. Jeremiah 1:5 says, *”Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born, I sanctified you….”* A husband should pray and wait upon the Lord concerning his children so that God will make them wonders to their generation. Employ God’s help in your parenting, where you cannot effect a change in your child, and God will touch the minutest aspects of your child *(see Is. 8:17-18; 54:13)*.

Also, as a priest in the home, you should protect your children— Luke 11:21 says, *”When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace.”* The lives of your children are like a garden in which you sow precious seeds. Their lives like the garden needs to be protected from trespassers. Provide protection over your children physically and spiritually through prayers. When a strong man keeps his goods they are safe.

There are various ways to protect your children, you can:

• Teach them how to resist bad friends.

• Help them with the proper management of their time by keeping them busy with school work, house chores and Bible clubs.

• Arrange skill acquisition, vacation jobs, or enroll them with a programme in your church.

The man as a priest in a home should have love and respect for his children. Ephesians 6:4 says, *”And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”* No living person is without flaws, yet God accepts, loves and trusts us. You in turn should extend it to your children. Love your children for who they are, not for who you expect them to be. This will help them improve on themselves to be what you by the spirit of God want them to be.

As a priest in the home, you should set up an altar where daily fellowship with God takes place, a place for reading and sharing of God’s words and for worship and prayers.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, grant me the grace to fulfil my role as a priest in my home in Jesus name. Amen.
